Learn how to install the Mod Kit on your Chromatic console with this clear, step-by-step guide. Customize buttons, swap shells, and avoid common mistakes.

Quick answer

Installing the Chromatic Mod Kit lets you swap buttons, change membrane stiffness, and even adjust the D-Pad post length. Use the included dual-sided driver and follow the steps below to customize your console without damaging any components.

What the Mod Kit includes and why it matters

The Mod Kit comes with the only dual-sided Tri-Wing / Gamebit driver, the full A/B button color library (plus clear), and multiple membrane stiffness options. You can also change your D-Pad post length to fine-tune the feel. This means you can refresh a worn console, match your style, or repair a sticky button without buying separate tools.

One trade-off: the kit does not include replacement screws or a new shell. If your screws are stripped or you want a full shell swap, you will need to source those parts separately.

Step-by-step installation guide

  1. Power off and remove the battery: Turn off your Chromatic console and remove the battery cover. Take out the battery to avoid any electrical shorts during the mod. Common mistake: leaving the battery in can cause accidental power-on or short circuits. Always remove it first.
  2. Remove the back screws with the included driver: Use the dual-sided Tri-Wing / Gamebit driver from the Mod Kit. Insert the correct bit (Tri-Wing for the outer screws, Gamebit for inner ones) and unscrew each one. Place screws in a safe, labeled container. Checkpoint: keep screws organized by location—some may be different lengths. Mixing them up can strip the threads.
  3. Separate the front and back shells: Gently pry the front and back shells apart using a plastic spudger or your fingernail. Start from a corner and work around the edge. Do not use metal tools—they can scratch the plastic. Common mistake: forcing the shells apart can break the clips. If it resists, double-check that all screws are removed.
  4. Swap the A/B buttons and membranes: Remove the existing A/B buttons and silicone membranes. Choose your preferred color and stiffness from the Mod Kit. Place the new membranes in the correct orientation (the raised dot aligns with the contact pad), then snap the buttons on top. Checkpoint: ensure the membranes sit flat and the buttons click freely before reassembling. A misaligned membrane causes mushy or stuck buttons.
  5. Adjust the D-Pad post length (optional): If you want a shorter or longer D-Pad throw, swap the post on the back of the D-Pad using the included driver. A shorter post gives quicker, more responsive inputs; a longer post provides more tactile feedback. Common mistake: over-tightening the post screw can crack the D-Pad. Tighten until snug, then stop.
  6. Reassemble and test: Align the front and back shells and press them together until the clips snap. Insert and tighten all screws in the reverse order. Reinstall the battery and battery cover. Power on the console and test every button, including the D-Pad, for proper feel and response. Checkpoint: if a button feels off, open it back up and check the membrane and button alignment. Do not force the shell closed if something feels misaligned.
