How It Started

It started as an idea to build a playable portfolio for my personal website – and that’s when I discovered GB Studio. From there, I was hooked.

Other Games / Projects

Self Simulated is my first “real” video game. Since then, I’ve started work on Fuse Dash, an arcade-style action platformer for the Game Boy Color that’s still in development. I’ve also helped with level design and QA testing for other indie devs' projects along the way.

Fun Fact

Self Simulated was made while camping across Europe – Italy, Norway, Denmark, England, Scotland, and the Netherlands. I worked entirely on my laptop while on the road. Oh, and my wife designed two of the levels!

The Idea

Why I Made This Game

Making a video game has always been a dream of mine. After watching Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “Why Does Celeste Feel So Good to Play?”, I wanted to try building a platformer that felt just as smooth and satisfying – on the Game Boy Color, no less.

What Makes This Game Special

Just the fact that it exists! When I look back at the time, effort, and learning that went into Self Simulated, it honestly feels like a miracle. Like – I made a video game! That’s freaking awesome.

You'll Love This If...

You enjoy tight, responsive platformers – especially if you like mastering precise controls.

Inspiration / Influences

My aim was to create something that feels like a mix between Celeste and Katana Zero – but on the GBC.

Favorite Feature

Definitely the assist settings. They let players tweak the game’s difficulty to match their play style, which makes it more accessible without compromising the core experience.

The instant retry on death is a godsend—I died maybe fifty times on one level and never once felt the loading screen drag. The way the movement flows makes each attempt feel like a fresh puzzle rather than a chore, and I actually felt my brain rewiring as I pieced back the story.

The opening level where you wake up inside the machine hit me harder than I expected for a digital copy premise. The fast movement feels incredibly tight, and being stripped of memory makes every retry feel purposeful. I've already lost an evening to it.

Ruby ★★★★☆

The instant retry mechanic kept me hooked for hours, and the fast movement genuinely makes each death feel like my fault rather than the game's. It drags slightly in the middle levels where the difficulty spikes feel more tedious than challenging, but the payoff of piecing together who you were is w
